The disc separator functions as a vertical centrifuge, with the drum mounted on the top of the vertical axis and driven by a motor for high-speed rotation. The drum contains a series of nested disc-shaped parts with small gaps between them. Suspensions or emulsions are introduced into the drum through a central feed tube.
As the suspension or emulsion flows through the gaps between the discs, solid particles or droplets are forced to settle on the discs, forming a sediment or liquid layer. The sediment is then separated from the disc and collected in the drum's largest diameter portion, while the separated liquid is discharged through an outlet.
The discs play a crucial role in shortening the settling distance of solid particles or droplets, expanding the settling area of the drum, and significantly increasing the separator's production capacity.
