The disc separator functions as a vertical centrifuge, with the drum mounted on the top of the vertical axis and driven by a motor for high-speed rotation. The drum contains a series of nested disc-shaped parts with small gaps between them. Suspensions or emulsions are introduced into the drum through a central feed tube.
As the suspension or emulsion flows through the gaps between the discs, solid particles or droplets are forced to settle on the discs, forming a sediment or liquid layer. The sediment is then separated from the disc and collected in the drum's largest diameter portion, while the separated liquid is discharged through an outlet.
