The disc separator functions as a vertical centrifuge with the drum mounted on the top of the vertical axis, driven by a motor for high-speed rotation. The drum contains a series of nested disc-shaped parts with small gaps between them. Suspensions or emulsions are introduced into the drum through a central feed tube. As the suspension flows through the disc gaps, solid particles or droplets are separated and form a sediment or liquid layer on the discs. The separated solid accumulates in the drum's largest diameter portion, while the liquid is discharged through an outlet.
