The disc separator operates as a vertical centrifuge with the drum mounted on the top of the vertical axis. Driven by a motor, the drum rotates at high speed. It consists of a series of nested disc-shaped parts with small gaps between them. Suspensions or emulsions are introduced into the drum through a central feed tube. As the suspension flows through the gaps between the discs, solid particles or droplets settle on the discs, forming a sediment or liquid layer. The sediment slides along the disc surface, accumulating in the drum's largest diameter portion, while the separated liquid is discharged through an outlet.
